Maria, a Muslim Convert, Tells Her Story

"I would like you to pray for me because living a Christian life is not easy. "

In ruins of a destoyed church, Nigerian Christians return to worship.

NIGERIA: I really appreciate the Lord in a time like this. Nobody spoke to me about Christ but I became a Christian through a dream. One day in a dream I saw a man, tall in a white robe with a cross on his chest. He spoke to me about himself. I was thinking, maybe it was a demon, trying to torment me.

He said, “Don’t be afraid; it is the Lord that sent me to you. The only thing you must do is accept Christ to be your Lord and saviour. That’s why I am here. ”

In my entire life I never heard anything about Jesus Christ. I asked him, “Where is that Jesus Christ that you said he is the one who sent you to me. Where is he living? ” He said, “He is in heaven.”

When I was in discussion with that man, I told him it is not going to be easy with me because in our house there are great Islamic scholars which will never allow me to become a Christian. So that will be a terrible thing for me to do. He said, “The only thing to do, my daughter, is to accept Christ as your Lord and saviour and there is nothing that will be impossible with God. I will be with you. ”

In a Koran school where I used to go, a teacher told us that if any demon is attacking to us, we should recite a certain verse, and the demon will go. But even though I was reciting that verse, that person remained there. He said, “Well one thing I want you to know. If you accept Christ to be your Lord, there will be persecution, but at the end of it you will have eternal life.”

So in the last discussion we had, he told me I should kneel down for a prayer. After he prayed for me, he disappeared. Before he disappeared, I told him I accepted the person he was telling me about ... that is Jesus Christ. Before he disappeared, he said, “The greatest message I have for you today is all your brothers and sisters and parents will hate you because of this new faith.”

After this, my parents found out that I didn’t go to “Salat” ( Islamic prayer) and they started to beat me. They thought that the reason I became a Christian was because of my interaction with Christian girls.

Then they brought all my property to one place and set it ablaze and sent me out of our house. There is one Christian woman in our neighbourhood, and out of sympathy, she took me into her home and began to take care of me for a period of six months.

Later, Muslims in the area said they would go and put her house on fire because I was living with her. But the Christian woman told me to not go anywhere, that she was ready to die with me because of this.

One day they organized some Muslim youth to watch for me and catch me if they saw me anywhere. I just decided to go up into the mountains and stay there until night before going back to that Christian sister’s house.

For fear of attack I had to leave the house of that woman and live with another lady who is also a Christian. I stayed in her restaurant where she gave me food and clothes. From there my parents brought the police and arrested that woman. While I was in hiding, I found out that my mother was dead and I was warned that I shouldn’t try to visit. From there I was brought in for discipleship.

You can look at my body and you will see signs of what has happened to me as a result of my conversion. Presently I have no mother and no father. They died some time ago. But in all I can see the goodness of the Lord in my life. Look at how he is taking care of me and I really appreciate him for what he is doing in my life.

Prayer points:

I would like you to pray for me because living a Christian life is not easy. There are so many challenges. Also pray that the Lord will keep me able to endure, because at the end there is a gift ... eternal life when I see Jesus.

I would also like you to pray for me because I made a covenant with the Lord that no matter what I am passing through, I will stand firm in Him.

And it is also my desire that the Lord will use me mightily to preach his Word where I come from. I pray that the Lord will give me patience to be able to endure.
